The United States and God’s Protection
Could it be possible that we have pushed God so far out of our corporate life as a nation that God has lifted his hand of protection from us? Am I being too bold to think God would have been protecting the United States all this time?
The answers to both these questions can be easily found in the Bible. Throughout the traces of man’s relationship to the Divine, Holy God, the Bible clearly demonstrates how time and time again God’s people have pushed God out of their lives. They then refused to hear the call of God to turn back. We can read about the patience and love of God as he tries one thing after another to wake them up and remind them that it is He, not themselves or their idols, which provides prosperity, peace, and protection.
Sometimes the people do wake up and realize they have fallen away from God, and turn back. Many times, however, they do not.
Keep in mind, the evidence of their “falling away” is clearly seen in the erosion of their values, their morals, their integrity, their decency, and their abusive, unjust practices. There are stories of corruption within their leaders and their courts. There are stories of the government stealing land from the people. There are stories of businesses cheating their customers. There are stories of the people choosing to discontinue worship of God in the temple, but to worship idols at more convenient places. There are stories of child abuse, rampant immorality, and even child sacrifice to the idols of their choice.
Most important of all, is their anger and hostility toward the prophets of God who speak against such practices. The more the truth is presented to them, the greater their outrage. The prophets are called fools and told to take their ugly words and go home. They are sometimes murdered.
God lovingly sends more prophets, and more, and yet the people continue to slide into more and more sinful behavior.
Eventually, because God is a loving God, and because God has given us the free will to choose, he accepts their choice. When he accepts their choice to live without him, God pulls away. When God gives them life without God, they get life without God’s protection as well.
Remember, they really didn’t want to be bothered with God. They didn’t want to live under God, they wanted to be in full control of their own lives and run things their own way. So they God what they wanted, and it led to their full destruction each and every time.
We, as a Christian nation, have been under God’s protection. Christian’s and Jews are what the Bible refers to as God’s chosen people. God’s people have been and always will be those who choose to seek him, love and worship him, and follow his teachings. First the Jews, and then the Gentiles who followed Christ and became known as Christians, are God’s people.
So my questions remain. Could it be possible that we have pushed God so far out of our corporate life as a nation that God has lifted his hand of protection from us? Am I being too bold to think God would have been protecting the United States all this time?
